In a contest run by Fortune Magazine, Toledo’s own American Floors and Interior has been named the 11th fastest growing company located in an inner city, following a nationwide hunt. What’s more, according to its president, Gary Johnson, it’s the number one company in the contest’s construction category.

The honor comes from a contest known as the ICIC 100, which stands for Incentives for a Competitive Inner City.

“They look to five businesses that are having rapid growth that are located within the inner city, to show that the inner city can be a mecca of economic development,” said Gary.

American Floors and Interiors is a local company that installs floor materials, as well as interior and exterior paint jobs. Founded in 2005, the company originally catered to the residential end of the flooring business, but time and success has allowed it to expand into the commercial side of construction as well. The painting element is, however, a more recent addition to their business model.

“In 2013 we began to incorporate painting into the flooring end of what we do, and it’s been going well ever since,” Gary said. Owing to their residential roots, such contracts can go as low as $500-1000, according to Gary, but they have also handled projects as high as $1 million. “Some of the bigger contracts we’ve had with Hollywood Casino. We’ve also done a lot of work at the University of Toledo, ProMedica Systems, Mercy Health Systems, and a lot of work with the state of Ohio and various different buildings they have within a 50-mile geographical area.”

Certainly the companies themselves benefit from local support, but businesses like his, said Gary, are good for the local economy and for its residents.

“They hire local people that live in those areas and so that helps to boost the economy with local people actually taking those jobs and learning skill sets they’ll be able to use the rest of their lives,” Gary said.
