Fall Family Fun: Johnston Fruit Farms

Chris Galford

October is in full swing and that means so are apples at the Johnston Fruit Farms in Swanton, OH. From now until Christmas, the farms will be hosting all sorts of apple-based concoctions—and plenty of activities, too.

“We make cider every day, press it fresh. It’s unpasteurized, so it’s the real deal. We also make a honey crisp cider, which is pure honey crisp apples in there and sometimes we make an antique blend cider which is really good too,” said Martha Mora, of Johnston Fruit Farms.

That stock has been building up since mid-August, thanks to a fruitful year, and as October goes on, Martha expects there to be as many as 20 different kinds of apples filling their shelves. These are replacing the strawberries from June and the blueberries from July, but are also there to supplement the activities the farms are offering for families and children over the weekends.

“Every weekend through Halloween we’ll have hayrides Saturdays and Sundays. There’s the big pumpkin wall that people enjoy climbing around and having pictures taken in front of. (You can) pick your own apples and pick your own pumpkins,” Martha said.

In addition, the farms also support a number of animals the public is welcome to interact with, including a miniature donkey and a small pony, some goats, sheep, rabbits and chickens. As a full-fledged farm, Johnston Fruit Farms represents an opportunity not only for the community to pick up some treats, but to familiarize themselves with the places that supply those treats.
