The Schakolad Chocolate Factory in Perrysburg offers a variety of chocolates to its customers, but owner Gordon Ebright tried to think outside the box as he looked to open a second store in Sylvania.

Gordon decided to offer self-serve frozen yogurt alongside Schakolad chocolates that has been popular with people who have walked through the door at the business located on Sylvania Avenue. Gordon’s venture in offering frozen yogurt began after he drove to Jenison, Michigan, to meet with Steve and Peg VanKoevering, who own a store known as Frozen Yogurt Inspirations.

“As soon as I went out there and tried the frozen yogurt, I knew this is what I wanted to do,” Gordon said. “It’s just one of those things where the Lord doesn’t give you things he doesn’t want you to have.”

Gordon said he believes it was something meant to be and eventually acquired equipment obtained through auctions in Cincinnati and Detroit for the proposed second location that was still a work in progress at the time. He also moved forward in purchasing four frozen yogurt machines that he says cost him about $30,000 in eight minutes.

“If you’re an entrepreneur and you believe in what you’re doing, you have to go forward and take a leap of faith,” Gordon said.

While there are other Schakolad Chocolate Factory locations in the United States, Gordon said the store, which opened June 2, is the first to offer self-serve frozen yogurt, which can be ordered in four different sizes with an assortment of toppings available. He added that he wants people to come in and enjoy themselves as a family when they come to the business.

Schakolad Chocolate Factory has major clients such as the University of Toledo and Huntington National Bank, but also works with non-profit organizations as well, according to Gordon.

“Our stores are about service and focused customers and that’s where our emphasis is identifying customers,” he said.
