Now starting mornings off right with Strachn Bakery

For a business that began decades ago with a young boy plucked from his bedroom to start making donuts in the wee hours of the morning, it seems only appropriate that Strachn Bakery is beginning to appeal to the breakfast side of fresh baked goods. Under owner—and the aforementioned youth now grown-up—Doug Strachn, this family owned store comes with a focus on donuts, but also a full selection of one’s bakery needs.

Yet Strachn Bakery did not always bear its current shape—or even the name.

“Originally, we sold donuts in the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market. Then we opened a business in Adrian, Michigan in ‘77. We called it the Donut Hole when we first started—then when we migrated to Toledo in ‘86 and took on Strachn Bakery,” Doug said.

Strachn Bakery established itself at Monroe Street, then Arlington and Maumee. Originally, it was a wholesale model, its focus on distribution to places like the Andersons, the local hospitals, General Motors plants, and Chrysler plants. It was only about 9 years ago, in 2005, when Doug took the business into retail with its current location.

Today, donuts, cookies, pies, breads, and cakes for both weddings and birthdays can be found under the bakery’s roof, along with a new local chef who has added paninis and Strachn- made bread for the morning crowd. With fall just around the corner, however, no such treat would be complete without a piping hot cup of coffee, which the bakery also brews up for its customers.
