Help for hair loss

By Dr. Hope Mitchell, FLTN Columnist- Hair Loss is a concern at any age. Society has placed a great deal of social and cultural importance on hair and hairstyles. Unfortunately, many conditions, diseases and improper hair care can result in excessive hair loss. Dermatologists, who specialize in treating diseases of the hair, skin and nails, evaluate hair loss by asking questions about diet, medications, family history of hair loss, recent illness and hair care habits. Hormone levels may also need to be evaluated in women. After obtaining your medical history, your dermatologist may do a scalp biopsy or order blood work to help evaluate your hair loss and make an accurate diagnosis. It is important to find any underlying cause(s) that may respond to medical treatment. Most hair shedding is due to the normal hair cycle, and losing 50 to 100 hairs per day is no cause for alarm. If you consistently notice your hair shedding in large amounts after combing or brushing, or your hair becomes noticeably thinner, you should consult a dermatologist. With the correct diagnosis, many people with hair loss can be helped. Most insurance companies will cover hair loss evaluation and treatment.
