The Next Sweet Thing SP smallThe Next Sweet Thing bakery in Sylvania offers customized cakes, cookies and cupcakes for special occasions as well as sweet treats that hit the spot any time of day.

“I’ve always been into cakes and baking,” said owner and Chef Jennifer Haley. “I went to culinary school at Schoolcraft College and cooked for the next seven years. After stumbling upon an idea for chocolate-covered Oreos, I decided to return to my first love, which was baking.”

She opened The Next Sweet Thing in January and introduced customers to her specialty: chocolate-dipped Oreos and Nutter Butters, which she expertly decorates to resemble seasonal symbols and popular characters, like those from Sesame Street and Winnie the Pooh. Jennifer can customize her creations for virtually any holiday or special occasion, from baby showers and birthdays to Father’s Day and football season.

“We can create designs for every holiday,” she said, adding that during December, customers will be treated to Oreo Santas, elves and reindeer.

Coffee and donuts, cupcakes, sugar cookies and mini pies are also available, and full-size pies are available by special order.

“We’re really excited for fall,” Jennifer added. “We’ll be making pecan, pumpkin, apple and cherry mini pies.”

Jennifer hopes to exhibit once again at the Applebutter Fest in Grand Rapids, Ohio, on Sunday, October 12. She plans to feature Halloween- and Thanksgiving-themed Oreos as well as The Next Sweet Thing’s caramel apples, which will be available in the fall.

“We will have gourmet flavors of caramel apples, including Maple Bacon, Tree City Turtle, Cookies ’n Cream, Pumpkin Pie and Peanut Butter Blitz.”

The Next Sweet Thing is open Mondays from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are closed Sundays.
