Shawn’s Irish Tavern has continued to see growth over the years since owner Jeff Lark and his brother, John, purchased the original location in Toledo on Heatherdowns Boulevard in 2002 before a decision was made to expand to other locations.

Other than its Toledo location, which was remodeled in 2004, the bar established in 1968 also calls itself home in Sylvania and in Waterville. Jeff said as a result of an expansion effort that was done at the first location, the amount of business doubled, but it wasn’t until 2009 that the brothers decided to open in Waterville.

The Waterville location can be found on South Third Street and once was home to as many as seven different restaurants and two grocery stores, according to Jeff, who said the placement of the business has always been an important consideration. The bar in Sylvania located on West Bancroft Street opened two years ago.

“We’ve never try to seek out a location on a main street,” Jeff said. “We like being in a neighborhood.”

August is typically a “transitional month” for Shawn’s Irish Tavern in preparing for the upcoming football season and the fall, according to Jeff, who offers food and drink specials and up to 20 large high-definition televisions in each location.

“That starts a heavy business season in October, November and December,” Jeff said.

Shawn’s Irish Tavern offers different food specials each day of the week, including hand-breaded perch on Fridays that has become a popular item among customers. Jeff can be found often at the Waterville location, in addition to the one in Sylvania.

The Heatherdowns location was sold last fall to Mike Shroyer, a longtime manager of the bar. The brothers have granted Mike a license to operate under the bar’s existing name that will allow it to keep the same menu, specials and consistency of the other locations.

“Mike was ready and we wanted to give him an opportunity to own his own business,” Jeff said.

“Every store has grown … and we’ve had good years and we hope to continue that trend. We were born and raised here in Toledo and enjoy doing business here,” Jeff said. “We appreciate the support that the community gives to our local businesses.”
