Toledo’s storied Eastwood Theater on East Broadway Street will reopen its doors on Saturday, August 2 when Cornerstone Church, located at 1520 Reynolds Road in Maumee, launches its Saturday services at 5 p.m. in the newly restored and renovated space.

Returning the theater to its original grandeur was an important undertaking for Cornerstone Church, which held services in the theater from 1993 until 2004.

Sharing the church’s vision to bring new life to the old theater is the Toledo Cinema Group, which is coordinating a schedule of family-friendly movies to be featured in the updated 320-seat theater.

“We now have a state-of-the-art digital projector. The sound is amazing; the picture quality is amazing, and we have a full concession stand,” explained Josh Harnegie, who oversees community relations and outreach for the Eastwood Theater.

The top-to-bottom renovation was undertaken by countless volunteers from the church and surrounding community organizations. The building also contains two multi-purpose classrooms that are suitable for community outreach initiatives.

“We want the theater to be a gathering point that’s safe and accessible for the people of East Toledo,” Josh said. “The church is very instrumental. They’ll have a presence here and bring all the resources that Cornerstone is able to bring to the table.”

A soft opening of the movie theater is anticipated for mid-August, with a more formal, grand opening celebration planned for later in the fall.

For the generations that watched classic movies like the original “Frankenstein” and “The Blob” in the historic theater, the remodeling efforts were a welcome sight, and Josh said the outpouring of support from the local community for both the presence of Cornerstone Church and the movie theater has been overwhelming.

“The restoration took a lot of manpower and resources,” Josh added. “The Eastwood Theater and Cornerstone Church both want to do good things for the people of East Toledo.”
