From ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’ to the streets of Maumee: Tom + Chee
By Chris Galford
Sometimes, that flicker of an idea is less a light bulb and more the illumination of a TV screen. A year ago, Pam and Tim Adams were watching ABC’s “Shark Tank” as a presentation was made for new franchise business—a self-proclaimed quirky grilled cheese business out of Cincinnati. That night, events were set in motion that would lead to Maumee’s own Tom + Chee restaurant.
“Their signature is a grilled cheese donut. That’s their claim to fame, because when they did start out, they started in a tent in a Cincinnati square,” Tim said.
Together, the Adams opened the ninth franchise of Tom + Chee’s on May 9, playing host to that signature dish, as well as a slew of other casual dining delights, from cinnamon or strawberry dessert-style donuts to meals catered to any dining needs.
“We are vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free—we have options for all of those. Everything’s separately laid out, and nothing is touched with the regular, no contamination,” Pam said.
All the recipes within the franchise originate from the founders of Tom + Chee, and locally they will be on display at the Taste of Maumee as well, on August 15 and 16.
