Charlie’s new Maumee locale brings a whole new Greek look and feel to the chain, setting it apart from its predecessors.

Charlie’s Restaurant is a family business. It began and continues under patriarch Charlie Kyriakos Kyriakou, but this year has marked a fourth expansion of its dining experience across the streets of greater Toledo, this time in Maumee under Charlie’s son, George. The name brings with it its own share of familiarities, but the new restaurant also promises a diverse expression of that name.

“There’s nothing much different on the menu, but we’re focusing a little more on the pizza, the dips, the gyros, the kebabs, stuff like that,” George said. “A local designer in town helped us with the design. We had the space and we wanted to utilize and develop the property, and give people a little bit more Greek feel with their alcohol and Mediterranean cuisine … a little different feel, changing with the times.”

The chain originally began in 1972, south of Coney Island. Having survived the ups and downs of the economy over the decades, the chain has seen rises and falls alike. At its height, the chain sported 10 separate restaurants, but through it all, certain traits have held steady: half off breakfasts every day for example, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. (as long as a beverage is ordered), and free dining experiences for children on Sundays and Mondays in August.

While open to all, the restaurant features separate facilities for business parties, complete with large-scale television screens compatible with computer-based presentations.

As though food alone weren’t enough to set this new locale apart, the building itself has also undertaken some dramatic changes from its fellow restaurants. Following its year-long construction, the Charlie’s Restaurant in Maumee has come to feature a patio with tables for outdoor dining experiences, as well as a drive through to accommodate diners with a need for speed.
