How to hire the right contractor

by Dan Mahl, FLT Columnist

Looking to hire a contractor for your next home improvement project? Here are some questions to ask to make sure you find the right contractor for your job.

• Pre-qualify on the phone: What is their time frame? Are they licensed and insured? Do they have experience with jobs like yours?

• During the initial meeting: Discuss all the work you intend to have completed in detail. Ask for money saving suggestions.

• When bids come in: Ask how long their bid is valid. How are changes or additions handled? Who is responsible for paperwork and permits? How will they protect your property during construction? Will the contractor be on site most of the time?

• Making the final selection: Don’t jump on the lowest bid. If one bid is low, the candidate may be inexperienced or intends on cutting corners. Be sure you understand everything that is included in the bid.
