When owners Kierston Deaton and Ashlynn Brish joined forces to create The French Twist Salon and Spa, they had a battle ahead for the style of their new vision. What they had, however, was far more important — a connection and the space to help it grow.

Ashlynn Brish lives in the same neighborhood where she works. It’s important to her — she is connected to the area. She also has a connection with her partner, Kierston, because they have been coworkers and friends for more than a decade now.

“I’ve been behind a chair for 15 years. My partner Kierston Deaton has been doing hair for 10 to 12. We have been long time friends, worked in a salon together, but this is the first time we’re going into business together. We’re like family,” Ashlynn said.

When they left their old jobs in the summer of 2014, though, and found their new locale, what they were given was a building from a bygone era. They had the connections, but they needed to make the space truly theirs. For four months, until October 1, 2014 they went on an overhaul of the whole space, not merely knocking things down, but recreating in old spaces, along with outright building new ones.

What has it left them with? A full service salon with a growing staff to match. If it has to do with hair, they’re on it — cutting, coloring, and smoothing keratin treatments, too. They also pamper nails, but the way in which they handle their manicures and pedicures is a little different from their competitors.

“We set this up more like a boutique. We don’t use the big pedi spa chairs you see in a lot of places. We do individual bowls, essential oils, so when we sanitize there’s no jets, no funk, no nothing — it’s greener, in that aspect,” Ashlynn said.

For Mother’s Day, the salon is also offering a contest that could net lucky winners a free conditioning treatment and pedicure for their mother. Winners are chosen May 7, through submissions to the French Twist’s Facebook page.
