Carolyn Beyersdorf, IIDA of Decorating Den Interiors builds a blend of her professional expertise and customers’ personal tastes

For over 45 years, Decorating Den Interiors has been redesigning homes and businesses across the country, but locally, Carolyn Beyersdorf purchased a franchise going on four years ago.
As a franchise owner, Carolyn represents more than 85 suppliers of home furniture, accessories, lighting, floor and wall coverings, and window treatments. First visits — “consultations” — are complimentary for prospective clients and conducted in the home or at the office.
Because Carolyn has done interior design for more than 30 years, the franchise is a perfect fit. She has an associate’s degree in interior design and business from Davis College and classes from the University of Toledo. Initially, it was a mixture of architecture and commercial interiors that drew her interest.
“I just always had a passion for art, wanting to make spaces more functional and aesthetically pleasing,” said Carolyn.
Her professional experience varied, from designing corporate offices to higher education facilities.
In later years, “I had gone into sales for a commercial furniture company, was displaced, and so I had done some retail in the interim … and it just wasn’t right for me. I knew I needed to get back into my passion, which was design. That’s when I looked at the franchise opportunity. The model helped me make the decision: it’s now or never,” Carolyn said.
The franchise took. The support network of corporate staffers helped, Carolyn notes, but so too did the manufacturers Decorating Den Interiors opened up to her. That access gave her more buying power than she otherwise might have had.
On the corporate or institutional level, Carolyn has worked on everything from the expansive Toledo Mud Hens Fifth Third Ballpark, to small doctors’ offices, the Sylvania Senior Center, to religious structures. Yet with Decorating Den Interiors, Carolyn has also stepped outside her initial box. Nowadays, she works with residential projects in addition to her corporate background, opening up a whole new arena in which to practice her interior design.
“I can do a project as small as one window treatment, a complete room or an entire home. It really just depends on what the client is asking for and what their needs are. It’s a blend of my expertise, the customer’s taste and the latest design trends, all within budget,” Carolyn said.
Decorating Den Interiors is currently running a special of 20 percent off select seating upholstered lines, until the end of June. Carolyn is also offering a Color Trends Workshop on April 16, 2015 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at Lakeside Interior Contractors. RSVPs are necessary for those interested.
