The National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) presented Ohio State Representative Barbara Sears with the Spirit of Independence Award for her work in preserving the role of the health insurance agent.

Every year, NAHU awards individuals who exhibit an independent spirit and provide outstanding service to America with a focus on healthcare issues. Sears joins an esteemed list of past recipients that include key policymakers, White House advisors and other healthcare leaders.

As the third highest ranked member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, Sears is currently serving her third term as the House Majority Floor Leader. Sears is recognized as one of the few legislator experts on Ohio’s health insurance market and serves on three key committees that regularly address healthcare and health insurance issues. Being such a strong supporter for the health insurance market, Sears sponsored the House Bill 3, one of the most pro-agent and pro-consumer protection laws that regulate agents and navigators.

Sears is also the senior vice-president of Employee Benefits for Roemer Insurance after being a co-owner of Noble & Sears, an employee benefits and financial planning firm, for many years. Prior to joining the Ohio House, Sears served as president of Sylvania City Council and was chair of the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments. She was also active in her community by serving on the Board of Swan Creek Retirement Village, the Sylvania Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce.

“Representative Sears is a wonderful example of what understanding and experience can bring to the discussion of healthcare reform. Her dedication to improve healthcare not only in her own state but also to contribute to national efforts to make health reform benefit American individuals, families and businesses truly embodies the best of what this award represents,” said NAHU CEO Janet Trautwein.
