A PROPER THANK YOU

by Megan Coyle-Stamos, FLT Columnist

How often do your clients, your coworkers, or people in your professional life give you a very sincere, heart-felt thank you? A real hug, a handwritten note of appreciation?
I was very touched when Paula came into our funeral home and gave our directors this laminated poem. She had written it herself, as a tribute to her parents, for all the caregivers and directors who helped her through the difficult times. Her kind gesture make us all feel so good about the work we do in service of others.
I thought her poem should be shared with all those people who give selflessly in their careers in caring for people physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. My hope is that her words will replenish your soul, and confirm that your energy and efforts true make a difference. You make a difference in the comfort of the sick and dying, and make an impactful, long lasting impression in the hearts and minds of the family and friends who carry on.
“A PROPER THANK YOU TO MEMORIAL DIRECTORS AND CARETAKERS”
THE SERVICE YOU DO FOR THOSE IN SORROW
UPLIFTING THE BEREAVED
TO GET THEM THORUGH TOMORROW
TRULY, DIVINE WORK IS THIS YOU DO
AND DIVINELY ASSISTED ARE YOU-
SO VERY MANY, NEAR AND FAR
ON THIS SIDE AND THE OTHER
DESIRE YOU TO KNOW
YOU ARE GREATLY ADMIRED AND APPRECIATED
FOR THE LOVE AND COMPASSION YOU SHOW-
THERE ARE SOME WHO GRUMBLE AT THE WAGE YOU REQUEST
I SAY, THE BURDENS YOU SHOULDER ARE A SUPREME TEST
TENDING TO THEIR IMMEDIATE TIME OF CRISIS AND NEED
I QUITE SUSPECT MOST WOULD CRUMBLE INSTEAD-
WHAT YOU DO EACH AND EVERY DAY
FOR A BELOVED ONE’S PROPER GOODBYE
IS PRICELESS, INDEED, SAYS THIS ANGEL ON HIGH.”
