Toledo Audiologist Dr. Clint Keifer saw a need in the community for greater hearing health awareness, education and quality care. One year ago in February, Dr. Keifer began doing his part to fill this need when he opened Great Lakes Audiology in Toledo.

“I felt that hearing health care wasn’t what it should be,” Dr. Keifer said. “People didn’t have access to adequate information or resources. It was a long-time ambition of mine to open my own practice because I wanted to try to make it better.”

Unlike hearing aid salespeople who typically have no formal health care background and conduct only cursory screenings, audiologists like Dr. Keifer have the expertise to provide proper testing and treatment.

“Audiologists are educated and trained to conduct comprehensive testing and diagnosis, and we look for any underlying conditions that could be contributing to the hearing loss,” Dr. Keifer explained. “We treat the patient as a whole. Our services are far more comprehensive than what a patient would receive from a hearing aid dealer.”

Great Lakes Audiology offers hearing exams, tinnitus evaluations and earwax removal for pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. Dr. Keifer also provides management for hearing loss and tinnitus, cochlear implant mapping, and hearing conservation counseling and products (such as custom earplugs and monitors for musicians and hunters).

“I’ve treated patients who’ve been to hearing aid dealers and thought they were doing OK. But through a referral or other means, they found their way to me, and after going through the complete audiologic process, they’re blown away by the improvement,” Dr. Keifer said.

For those dealing with tinnitus, the Toledo Tinnitus Support Group will meet at Great Lakes Audiology on March 12 at 5:30 p.m. Call or email Great Lakes Audiology for more information.

“My ultimate goal is to maximize a patient’s function in everyday life,” Dr. Keifer added. “When I take them a couple of steps further, it really opens their eyes to what they’ve been missing.”
