DINE LOCAL! For 5 years, Spicy Tuna Sushi Bar has merged family industry with charity

Though Spicy Tuna Sushi Bar had its humble beginnings just five years ago, it brought to the table a family’s restaurant knowledge of more than three decades.
“My wife and I opened Spicy Tuna about five years ago, and for the past 30 plus years we’ve lived here,” said owner Li Yu.
Together with his wife, Sara, he is the latest restaurateur in a family that has been in the industry more than 30 years. One of the keys to their success, however, lies in their engagement with the community.
“We’re not only business owners, we’re also consumers, and it just makes sense because, from talking to fellow business owners, when we see locals supporting local businesses, it makes the local businesses thrive more. And by doing so, the business owners locally want to turn around and support the community as well,” Li said.
That support, in the case of the Yus, has extended to roughly 80 different organizations, from charities to schools, churches and individual families. They also run their own charity event annually, with raffle proceeds going directly to the year’s selected charity.
