The first anniversary of Zia’s Burger Bar just around the bend
By Chris Galford- When Zia opened the doors to his burger bar in March 2014, it was the latest result of a lifelong interest in the restaurant. What set Zia’s Burger Bar apart from its predecessors, however, was its dedication to simplicity and the classic American specialty: burgers.
“The best thing about our place is everything is fresh. Nothing is frozen. We make everything here on a daily basis,” Zia said.
That fresh selection includes more than just the burgers, of course. Sandwiches and chicken wings, along with soups, salads, and an assortment of appetizers like zucchini corn or onion rings round out the menu. The burgers themselves come in all different shapes and sizes (and toppings, too), with the one unifying factor between them being Zia’s determination to make them taste like something fresh out of the home kitchen. To that end, nothing hitting the tables is coming out of freezer storage.
The result is what bartender Sarah Hayes dubs, “It’s sort of a family place to be — your little neighborhood bar.”
Despite the fact that Zia admits Toledo is one of the toughest markets for the restaurant business, Zia himself has owned several nightclubs and restaurants in Toledo, as well as further south. It has always been a passion. Being a restaurateur has not always been his day job, though.
“It’s just something I enjoy doing. I’m a civil engineer and my main trade is building roads and bridges. I’m retired now and I have this place as someplace to hang around. That’s why I do everything like it’s home,” said Zia.
In addition to dining in, the restaurant also provides takeout options. Located between Nebraska and Dorr Street. in Toledo, it also hosts $6 lunch specials for those seeking a quick burger or sandwich and fries. Fans of happy hours will also be well received, with a daily half-off drink special from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
