Modern Chic Salon & Spa in Holland hosts charity event for nine-year-old cancer patient

Modern Chic SPBy Chris Galford- Valory Newton is a dancer. At nine-years-old, however, a tumor in her left leg threatens to take that away from her, and chemotherapy will cost her hair. It’s for that reason Modern Chic Salon & Spa in Holland stepped in last month with a cut-a-thon to give Valory, and others, wigs.

“She (Valory) is one of my granddaughter’s friends. They dance together. She’s going through cancer right now, and we decided we’re going to get all the local dancers together, cutting their hair so we can make a wig for her,” said co-owner Cassandra Griggs.

In a spa day-like atmosphere, the salon hosted hair cutting services and manicures, a silent auction and bake sale, all to raise money and gather hair for Valory. On the monetary side, the goal was for $2,000, according to co-owner Ashlee Griggs, but given the turnout from the community, they passed $3,000, with all the proceeds going to pay for the wig and to directly help the family’s bills.

“Valory had a great idea to use her own wig and her dance sister friends and the community in her wig. She wanted to know where the hair was coming from. So I found somebody in Utah that would actually take the hair and put it together with everybody that’s donating,” Ashlee said.

They wanted 18 pony tails, but they got so much more. In fact, the salon took in so much hair that day, they have enough for another wig, which they’re looking to donate to another family that, perhaps, did not have the support that Valory has been fortunate enough to possess.

Valory suffers from Ewing sarcoma in her fibula, a rare bone cancer for which she will be undergoing nine months of chemo. People can also donate to her cause on an on-going basis, according to Ashlee, through a campaign or utilizing donation baskets at the salon itself.
